Devachan is a state ( not a place) that one attains after death and

before the next life. The concept is often mistaken for Heaven.

But there’s no need be disappointed, Devachan is still something

to look forward to. Get some idea of what to expect with

Kama Loka

Can be Hell, but not eternal

Theosophy rejects the idea of one life to face the judgment of god or any other final reckoning so no after death state can be permanent.

Kama Loka can be very unpleasant depending on the life lived. This happens when a person has built up enough low level astral material in his astral body to become trapped on the corresponding sub plane of the astral plane.

Once the astral matter has dissipated the individual is then released up to the next level of the astral plane. The catch comes in the time it can take and not knowing that it will come to an end.

All round good people and the spiritually developed move up much more quickly sometimes not noticing as they breeze through the lower astral planes.

Not eternal damnation but not good

The astral plane like all other planes of nature has seven levels. The lower levels of the astral plane can be very unpleasant places and it is possible to be trapped there for a very long time. Intense desires and emotional tendencies developed in life are still there but cannot be satisfied. This includes desire for alcohol, drugs, power and also hatred or anger.

There are also some unsavoury discarnate entities that permanently inhabit the lower astral subplanes and are likely to torment any individual trapped there.

This state can therefore be regarded as comparable to being in Hell but it is not eternal and the individual will eventually rise out of it. It’s better to avoid it in the first place though.

Rising to one’s own level

If you have led a reasonable life then you won’t have much, if any, lower astral material and you can probably expect to rise to a middle level of the astral planes. You stay there for a while on the same terms as those trapped lower down but its not as unpleasant. This is probably comparable to the concept of Purgatory.

The top level of the astral plane is a much pleasanter place to be before moving on to Devachan.
